Few question the importance of hydration for optimal health. Every cell, tissue, and organ in your body needs water to work properly. Water is used by the body to maintain its temperature, remove waste, and lubricate your joints. It helps transport nutrients that give you energy. A human being can survive weeks without food, but only days without water.

Many consider tap water to be an acceptable option. Suffice it to say, not only is it not acceptable, tap water is to be avoided at all costs! Here’s why.

The primary chemicals in tap water are chlorine and fluoride. Chlorine itself isn’t necessarily toxic. The problem is that chlorine tends to bind with organic materials and that’s where things go wrong. Twigs, sticks, stems, and leaves dissolve in the water supply, and when chlorine binds with these particles it forms what are called disinfectant byproducts, the two most common being trihalomethanes (THMs) and halo acetic acids (HAA5s). These contaminants in our tap water are one thousand times more toxic than chlorine!

When it comes to fluoride, the news is just as bad. In an attempt to reduce cavities, many countries started adding fluoride to their drinking water supplies because “experts” convinced them of its benefits. However, this issue was manipulated by special interest groups to conveniently dispose of industrial byproduct poisons. It didn’t take long for countries to put the pieces together, which is why Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Austria, France, and the Netherlands ban fluoride from their drinking water.

Problems with fluoride are that it:

  • Accumulates in your bones, causing them to be brittle and easily fractured
  • Inactivates some of your enzyme systems
  • Disrupts your immune system, causing it to attack normal working tissues in your body
  • Accelerates your aging process
  • Causes cellular and genetic damage
  • Damages your tooth enamel by hardening the outer surface

Chlorine and fluoride are just two of the common demons lurking in our tap water. But now Chloramine is new on the scene–it is highly toxic (contains ammonia) and unfortunately it is now necessary to ‘kill bugs’ in the drinking water; However, it doesn’t have to be on the actual ‘ingredients list’ from your local water district. If you filter your water, be sure that the filter states that it will remove Chloramine. We wish that was all, but there are others such as copper and lead, arsenic and other heavy metals which can contaminate any of our water supplies, which are being found. New issues for continued contamination abound, The chemtrails are depositing onto the local groundwater, hazardous waste is still not completely regulated. 

Pharmaceuticals are a large and growing problem, too. Many of the dosages are so high that the meds pass through into the urine. The average individual takes 13 different drugs a year and when they urinate or excrete them through their stool, or even discard their unused prescriptions down the toilet. These meds end up in our water supply and are in tap water and cannot be completely filtered out. Many of these drugs are in the domestic water supplies even in remote locations.  

What about Well Water? Isn’t it safe? 

Most of the Eastern states have been under the new fracking agenda by the power companies, and the chemicals they use for fracking is extensive: some of which they don’t have to disclose. The groundwater is being invaded by many of these solvents and toxic chemicals. This is the short list: petroleum distillates such as kerosene and diesel fuel (which contain benzene, ethylbenzene, toluenexylene, naphthalene and other chemicals); polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbonsmethanolformaldehydeethylene glycolglycol ethershydrochloric acid; and sodium hydroxide.

Also, well water is commonly known for containing heavy metals, so be sure to test it before you think that it is clean enough to drink.

What are the alternatives?

The two options people commonly turn to are: bottled spring water and filtered water.

Bottled water

The problem with bottled water is that it is not environmentally friendly. Bottles are manufactured, filled, and shipped around the globe using vast quantities of fossil fuels. Nor are they biodegradable in any meaningful way. In fact, the bottle you finish drinking in a few minutes can stick around for a thousand years.

The other problem is that research now shows us that up to 40% of bottled water is tap water, complete with tap water’s contaminants. And, third, although bottled water companies increasingly use BPA-free plastic, there are other chemicals laced into plastic bottles that can seep out into the water if bottles are exposed to heat or sit around for a long time. Some of these chemicals are possible endocrine disruptors. No one knows for sure what the health outcomes are.

Don’t let the sunshine on your water bottle left in the car for a hot day… it can become toxic! Be sure to buy from a trustworthy, spring water sourced suppliers and purchase it in gallon-sized jugs (or larger) as they are recycled and the most cost-efficient. Glass bottles for daily drinking is best!

Filtered water

A good choice is to filter the water from within your own home. Carbon Block or Coconut Compressed Carbon Block Filters are the most common. These function until they ‘fill up’ with contaminants and need to be replaced. They will ‘slow the flow.’

One of the top filtering methods promoted in the health industry is counter-top distillation (which is not recommended in our opinion) because it changes the water, causing it to pull out minerals, and deplete the body of essential electrolytes. Some people use it because it is ‘pure,’ however, there is a cost to be paid inside the body–since it will pull out necessary minerals from the body, part of that is necessary so that the water can actually become suitable for the cells. So there is a cellular cost to drinking this type of water. It takes minerals out of the body. Distilation will cause long-term dehydration.

Other options include: Reverse osmosis which tends to remove all of the disinfectant byproducts and many other contaminants. The downfall to reverse osmosis is the quality of the membrane and its cost of replacement. A good system will typically cost between $1200 dollars or more, on top of the installation fee to have it put in your home. You have to choose between under the sink, or whole house systems which are more expensive. Also, Ionization is popular and it relies on proper pre-carbon filtration it may need added minerals to be put in before the ionization process. Although it works, you have to have some testing done on the water going into your home to be sure you are getting what is promised to come out at the filter. Some RO or Ionizer filters ‘split’ the water into two parts: one good and one bad. These systems tend to be water inefficient in that every gallon of water you make you tend to waste a near equivalent that you can’t use. Some passive water ionizer filters (you get to use all the water you treat). They use ionizing rocks (often magnesium) in the bottom of the tank where water is exposed to the rock ( which people sware that it is creating strong ionized water), but the water holding tanks can become contaminated over time, so you must regularly clean the tank and  always be sure to have a good pre-carbon filter as well. There are small instruments available for testing the water beyond pH and toxic load and even ionization levels. Remember ionization treatment doesn’t last; it needs to be drunk fairly soon. (Like bubble in carbonated drinks). So at least to start, you will want a good carbon based filter.

There is an enormous difference in the quality of the carbon, or charcoal, that is used in filters. There are four points to consider here:

  1. Select a material that is aluminum-free, as most of these charcoals are contaminated with aluminum (up to 75% of the typical filters used on the market). One of the best sources found to date is coconut shells. Manufacturers generally grind them down and convert them to charcoal and it is generally aluminum-free.
  2. Ensure that the manufacture of acid washes the charcoal as it has been shown to eliminate the aluminum (rarely advertised).
  3. Many of the charcoal filters on the market today can become contaminated with mold and bacteria over time which is something you’ll want to address. You will be able to tell this by the taste of the water. If “off,” it likely means you have contaminated water.
  4. Try to find Compressed Coconut Carbon. It won’t have the challenges of Aluminum and it has a deeper duty cycle and you will need to replace these as often as every 3 to 6 months when the water flow reduces.

The bottom line

It’s difficult to change the environment we live in. But we can improve our outcomes by installing filtration systems for ensuring pure, clean water and drinking the amount that’s right for you, based on your specific needs. Be sure to not transfer the drinking water to common plastic bottles. These release BPA phenols into the water which mimic estrogen causing xenoestrogen effects; the bottles also increase landfill issues by creating biohazards. Education is required for us all, and the better we are at making a few changes at a time, the healtheir we’ll all be, and so will the planet.
